Buying a Mechanic Special Car: A Guide
Introduction
Buying a used car comes with both opportunities and challenges. For many, a Mechanic Special presents an attractive option, especially for those looking to save some money while potentially building their credit. However, it’s important to evaluate both the car’s current state and your financial options before making a decision. In this article, we’ll explore the experience of owning a Mechanic Special and how AllCreditAuto.Loan’s partner lenders can assist you in financing your next vehicle.
My Experience with a Mechanic Special
Recently, I decided to sell my car, which I purchased a couple of years ago for $3,200. While it served me well, it encountered a few issues that ultimately made it time to let go. Here’s a breakdown of what I experienced:
What I’ve Paid for the Past Two Years
- Installed backup camera/CarPlay
- Replaced transmission fluid
- Replaced brake pads
- Replaced fuel pump
- All tires have been replaced + aligned
What It Needs Now
- Radiator replacement
- 2 front struts
- 3 engine and transmission mounts
Additional Notes
While the car still drives, it requires careful handling. I’ve been advised to limit driving to short distances. Some other issues to note include:
- Oil change was recently done in August, but oil is leaking.
- The back door on the driver’s side locks and unlocks only manually.
- The latch for the gas tank door is broken, so it doesn’t close completely.
- Some windows were tinted, but the tint is fading.
Despite these issues, my mechanic affirmed that the engine is in great shape, which is a major consideration when selling a Mechanic Special.
Benefits of Buying a Mechanic Special
Buying a Mechanic Special can have several benefits:
Affordability
Mechanic Specials are often priced lower than similar cars in better condition, allowing you to buy a vehicle within your budget.
Opportunities for Negotiation
Since Mechanic Specials often have known issues, you may have more room to negotiate the price with sellers aware of the repairs needed.
Potential for Value
If you’re handy or have access to a mechanic, you may be able to make repairs affordably, increasing the car’s overall value.
Getting the Financing You Need
For many potential car buyers, financing is a crucial element, especially when purchasing a Mechanic Special that may require future investments. AllCreditAuto.Loan works with a broad network of partner lenders who can help you secure financing tailored to your specific situation, whether you have:
Poor Credit
Even if you’re facing challenges with your credit score, AllCreditAuto.Loan can assist in connecting you with lenders who understand your situation and can provide options that suit your financial needs.
Bad Credit
Having bad credit doesn’t necessarily mean you cannot get a car loan. By working with AllCreditAuto.Loan, you can find lenders willing to work with you, increasing your chances of getting the financial help you need.
Good Credit
If you have good credit, it can make the car-buying process smoother and enable you to secure more favorable loan terms, such as lower interest rates.
Steps to Take When Buying a Mechanic Special
Here are some important steps to follow when considering the purchase of a Mechanic Special:
1. Evaluate the Condition
Before purchasing, take the time to assess the overall condition of the car. This includes understanding what repairs have already been performed and what future work is likely required.
2. Get a Mechanic’s Opinion

$2,000

Bought this car for $3200 a couple years ago, it was having some issues so I brought it to my mechanic and unfortunately the repairs are too much for me to afford at this time, however I’m sad to see it go! It still drives but my mechanic said to take it easy so I’ve only been driving it short distances. It’s been a nice car, but I’ve already invested a good amount in it this far so it’s time to let it go. Below I’ve listed the work I’ve put into it + what I’ve been told it needs.
What I’ve paid for the past two years:
– installed backup camera/CarPlay
– replaced transmission fluid
– replaced brake pads
– replaced fuel pump
– all tires have been replaced + aligned
What I’m told it needs:
– radiator replacement
– 2 front struts
– 3 engine and transmission mounts
Other things to note:
Recently got an oil change in August, however the car has been leaking oil. Back door on the drivers side only locks and unlocks manually, latch for gas tank door is broken so it doesn’t close all the way. One of the door windows and the back window were tinted previously to me buying it, and it’s wearing off. My mechanic said it is a great car and engine!
