Restoration Opportunity: The 1982 Toyota 4x4 Pickup

If you're a car enthusiast with a passion for restoration projects, the 1982 Toyota 4x4 pickup offers a unique opportunity. Although the vehicle requires significant work, its intrinsic value lies in its classic design and the potential to revive its former glory. Below, we explore the details of this vehicle and how you might secure financing options through AllCreditAuto.Loan.

Current Condition of the Vehicle

First, let's discuss the current state of the vehicle. While it starts and can technically drive, there are several concerns that potential buyers should be aware of:

The Bad

Frame Rot: The frame shows significant rust with holes large enough to fit fingers through in many areas.

Body Rot: The exterior has plenty of rust holes, which will need addressing during restoration.

Lack of Rear Shocks: The upper shock mounts are rusted away, compromising the suspension.

Clutch Slave Cylinder Leak: The clutch slave cylinder has a slow leak that requires topping up every couple of months.

Fuel Pump Issues: The fuel pump is not entirely reliable; it loses prime if left sitting too long, requiring a bit of creative starting technique.

Sticking Door Handle: The passenger door handle sticks and must be operated from within the vehicle.

Worn Door Hinges: The driver's door sags a bit and must be lifted to close properly.

Windows: The windows do not operate smoothly but can be adjusted with some effort.

Missing Rear Side Mirrors: The rear mirrors were removed but included in the sale.

Tire Issues: A couple of tires have slow leaks, which will need addressing.

Battery Not Included: The vehicle comes without a battery.

The Good

Classic Restoration Project: This truck is a rarity and would make a great project for someone looking to restore a classic vehicle.

Solid Front Axle: It features a highly desirable solid front axle.

Good Glass Condition: All glass appears to be in good shape.

Minor Rust on Doors and Hood: These parts have only minor rust, making them more manageable to restore.

Original Accessories: The vehicle includes a factory original Toyota cassette deck, radio, and jack, although their functionality is uncertain.

Engine Condition: The 22R engine starts and runs, albeit a bit rough, and could benefit from a carb clean and tune-up.

Manageable Oil and Grime: While there's no serious fluid leakage, it has significant caked-on oil and grime.

Salvageable Frame: The frame can be repaired by someone skilled in cutting and welding patch panels.

Clean Title: The vehicle comes with a clean title, making it insurable.

Pricing and Sale Information

The vehicle shows approximately 440,000 km on the clock. It's likely that the engine has been rebuilt at some point, though there are no guarantees. The seller is looking to sell the truck as a whole, especially to someone with the dedication needed for restoration. Below is the pricing schedule:

$5,000
Steveston area of Richmond
I wouldn’t consider this vehicle safe to drive in its current condition due to frame rot, but it does run and can be driven. It’s not currently insured but we have a fairly long driveway for test driving.
The bad:
* frame rot – lots of rust with holes big enough to stick your fingers through in many places
* body rot – plenty of rust holes in the body too
* no rear shocks. the upper shock mounts rusted away
* clutch slave cylinder has a slow leak. needs to be topped up every couple months. cheap to replace
* fuel pump not reliable. works fine if you start it frequently, but if you let it sit too long (a couple weeks) it loses prime and takes a lot of cranking before it starts pumping (I usually just pour a bit of gas in the carb to run the engine that way till the fuel pump primes and starts working again).
* passenger door handle sticks… must open from inside
* driver door hinges worn… door sags a bit and must be lifted to close
* windows do not roll up/down smoothly, but they will get there with a little coaxing
* rear side mirrors were about to fall off so I removed them, but they do come with the vehicle and I believe are factory original
* a couple tires have slow leaks (will go flat after a month or so)
* battery not included
* probably lots of other stuff I don’t remember or didn’t notice
The good:
* a classic truck that would make a great restoration project. you won’t find many of these around anymore
* highly desirable solid front axle
* all glass seems to be in good condition
* doors and hood have only minor rust
* factory original Toyota cassette deck and radio (not sure if they work)
* factory original jack
* 22R engine starts and runs… a bit rough but no smoke… could definitely use a carb clean and tune up
* no serious fluid leaks (nothing dripping on the pavement) but a lot of caked on oil/grime
* frame is salvageable for someone who knows what they are doing (cut/weld patch panels). plenty of youtube vids of people patching worse frames than this
* alternatively, I believe 1980-1989 toyota pickup and 4runner have the same frame with slight modification and can be used as a donor
* clean title… you could insure and drive it as is, though I wouldn’t recommend it
Approx 440,000 km on the vehicle. Not sure how much on the engine (likely rebuilt at some point but no guarantees).
I’ve been offered $400 for the cassette deck alone and $1000 for the front axle alone. I’d prefer to sell whole to someone with the passion, time and patience to restore it. I’m starting the price at $5000 and will drop it by $500 each month till it sells.
Price schedule is firm.
Now – $5000
Oct 1 – $4500
Nov 1 – $4000
Dec 1 – $3500
Jan 1 – $3000
etc.
Low offers welcome but I will just put you on a waiting list to call if the price gets there. I’m in no rush to sell.
Available to view most evenings after 6pm or most weekends after 10am.
Email me your questions or to arrange a viewing.
