Overview of the 1985 VW Vanagon GL Westfalia Full Camper
Meet the 1985 VW Vanagon GL Westfalia Full Camper, a vehicle that promises adventure and comfort. Rebuilt with a later model 1987 2.1 litre engine (upgraded from the stock 1.9 litre), this van is a perfect blend of nostalgia and modern performance. With an automatic transmission and always boasting a water-cooled engine, it’s the ideal choice for leisurely trips and spontaneous getaways.
Exterior and Interior Features
The exterior was originally a modest brown but has been transformed into a stunning white and green, receiving countless compliments for its eye-catching paint job. Inside, you’ll find a cozy brown/tan interior that accommodates up to four people and pets comfortably. The sleeping arrangement features a wider but thinner bed on top and a thicker but more narrow bed below, allowing for restful nights whether you’re parked by a beach or in a rustic campground.
Condition and Maintenance
Maintained with care, this van shows no major rust, only minor patches within seams. There’s some rust on the bumper, which can easily be sanded and painted if desired. Owners should note that like all old VW engines, it requires supreme gasoline due to its octane needs; using regular or plus gas can cause long-term damage.
Driving Experience
Since September 2021, the owner has enjoyed a remarkable driving experience. The van’s height and exceptional suspension offer a smooth ride, capable of maintaining speeds of 100-120 km/h on flatter highways, such as those on Vancouver Island.

Addressing Known Issues

- A small right-angle tailpipe is missing, although the exhaust system works fine.
- The radio antenna had to be removed due to damage but could be replaced or patched.

This van is an absolute joy 🙂
1985 VW Vanagon GL Westfalia Full Camper
Rebuilt with later model 1987 2.1 litre engine (stock 1985 was 1.9 litre) by Van Wonder in North Vancouver
Always had water cooled engine (1985’s and onward)
Automatic Transmission
Interior is Brown/Tan
Exterior was originally brown but now an amazing White/Green (the paint job is the most common compliment she gets)
2 sets of original keys
Sleeps 4 people plus pets comfortably! 2 up top (wider but thinner bed), 2 below (thicker but narrow bed).
No major rust, just common small patches within seams between panels
Bumper has most rust and could be sanded off and maybe paint the bumpers white (along with the hub caps) if you don’t want to maintain the chrome.
FYI – all the old engines in these vans (not just mine) require supreme gas due to the octane level. Regular or plus gas will damage the engine over time.
I’ve owned the van for since September 2021, bought in East Van and previous owners had it for about 5 years. I’m planning to move in the near future (nothing set in stone) and figure best to sell the van. I will miss it dearly!!
It’s a dream to drive, lots of height, best suspension I’ve ever felt. Can easily maintain 100-120km/h on the less hilly highways (such as on Vancouver Island).
2021 Repairs (non-exhaustive):
Took it into the shop after purchasing, engine was being flooded a bit and did an overall inspection and fixed everything at that time

Any many more small detailed repairs/additions!
Recent 2024 Repairs:
New GoWesty leather steering wheel cover
Included Extras:
VW Vanagon Manual/Textbook (required reading for every owner)
GoWesty insulation & privacy shade for front window
Original VW front curtain (snaps on)
Original VW sliding door bug screen
Original VW rear hatch bug screen
Original VW fridge ice trays (sought after online often)
Original VW sliding window screens (both of em)
GoWesty Van Cover, used the last 2 winters to help protect the van from all the rain
GoWesty “Wasser-Stopper” Pop-Top Rainfly (rainfly for when the pop-top is up)
Hubcap puller tool
GoWesty lock extension for rear hatch
Steering wheel lock with key
Spare coolant, spare oil, spare fuses, lots of other little extras
Issues with the van:
-Cannot unlock driver side door from outside, lock is very stuck. Have tried to unscrew it to clean/lubricate but the screws are also stuck very well.
-Propane tank is busted and needs replaced, has been since I bought the van, there’s cheap options to use small camp fuel tanks instead of replacing the whole tank.
-Small right angle tail pipe is missing but the shops are unable to add a new one without replacing the whole exhaust/muffler (which works completely fine).
-Earlier this year some hooligans messed with the radio antenna (on every car on my block..) and so I had to take it out. I have considered getting a new one or just getting some patch work done on the frame to fill the hole as it is possible to have an internal antenna or use bluetooth for the radio. One of the last pics is the spot I’ve covered with duct tape (the duct tape patch is much larger than the hole).
