Restoring a 1982 Toyota 4×4 Pickup: A Comprehensive Guide

Introduction

The 1982 Toyota 4×4 pickup is more than just a vehicle; it’s a piece of automotive history, celebrated for its ruggedness and reliability. Although the truck in question has seen better days, it presents a unique opportunity for those passionate about restoration. This article will delve into the current condition of the vehicle, the challenges that come with it, and the benefits of partnering with AllCreditAuto.Loan to finance your dream project, regardless of your credit history.

The Current Condition of the 1982 Toyota 4×4 Pickup

Before diving into the restoration process, it’s vital to understand the vehicle’s current state. Here are the key points regarding what needs to be addressed:

The Bad

  • Frame Rot: The vehicle exhibits significant rust with holes large enough to fit fingers through in many areas, which raises serious safety concerns.
  • Body Rot: Similar to the frame, the body has numerous rust holes as well.
  • Missing Rear Shocks: The upper shock mounts have rusted away, impacting the vehicle’s handling.
  • Clutch Slave Cylinder Leak: There’s a slow leak in the clutch slave cylinder, requiring periodic topping up.
  • Unreliable Fuel Pump: The fuel pump functions if the vehicle is started frequently, but it loses prime if left idle for too long.
  • Door Issues: Both passenger and driver doors have their quirks; the passenger door handle sticks, while the driver door sags due to worn hinges.
  • Window Mechanism: The windows do not operate smoothly, requiring some effort to open or close.
  • Missing Battery: The vehicle is sold without a battery.
  • Slow Leaking Tires: A couple of tires have slow leaks and will need attention as well.
  • Other Unknown Issues: There may be additional problems not yet detected.

The Good

  • A Unique Restoration Project: This classic truck is a rarity in today’s automotive landscape, making it a perfect candidate for restoration.
  • Solid Front Axle: Highly desirable for off-road capabilities and reliability.
  • Good Glass: All glass components appear to be in good condition, which is a major plus.
  • Minor Rust on Doors and Hood: The doors and hood feature only minor rust, making repair easier.
  • Original Equipment: The truck includes factory original items like the cassette deck, radio, and jack.
  • Engine Performance: The 22R engine starts and runs, albeit a bit roughly, indicating that it may still have life left.
  • No Major Leaks: While there is caked-on oil, there are no significant fluid leaks.
  • Salvageable Frame: For the right person, the frame is salvageable with proper techniques like cut-and-weld patching.

Restoration Potential

With approximately 440,000 km on the vehicle, the engine may have been rebuilt at some point. The restoration journey will involve extensive work but can be highly rewarding for enthusiasts. The truck is a clean title, providing a straightforward path to ownership. The asking price is $3,000, which is reasonable for someone willing to invest the time, effort, and resources into reviving this classic vehicle.

$3,000

Steveston area of Richmond

I wouldn’t consider this vehicle safe to drive on the street in its current condition due to frame rot, but it does run and can be driven. It’s not currently insured but we have a long driveway for test driving.

The bad:
* frame rot – lots of rust with holes big enough to stick your fingers through in many places
* body rot – plenty of rust holes in the body too
* no rear shocks. the upper shock mounts rusted away
* clutch slave cylinder has a slow leak. needs to be topped up every couple months. cheap to replace
* fuel pump not reliable. works fine if you start it frequently, but if you let it sit too long (a couple weeks) it loses prime and takes a lot of cranking before it starts pumping (I usually just pour a bit of gas in the carb to run the engine that way till the fuel pump primes and starts working again).
* passenger door handle sticks… must open from inside
* driver door hinges worn… door sags a bit and must be lifted to close
* windows do not roll up/down smoothly, but they will get there with a little coaxing
* rear side mirrors were about to fall off so I removed them, but they do come with the vehicle and I believe are factory original
* a couple tires have slow leaks (will go flat after a month or so)
* battery not included
* probably lots of other stuff I don’t remember or didn’t notice

The good:
* a classic truck that would make a great restoration project. you won’t find many of these around anymore
* highly desirable solid front axle
* all glass seems to be in good condition
* doors and hood have only minor rust
* factory original Toyota cassette deck and radio (not sure if they work)
* factory original jack
* 22R engine starts and runs… a bit rough but no smoke… could definitely use a carb clean and tune up
* no serious fluid leaks (nothing dripping on the pavement) but a lot of caked on oil/grime
* frame is salvageable for someone who knows what they are doing (cut/weld patch panels). plenty of youtube vids of people patching worse frames than this
* alternatively, I believe 1980-1989 toyota pickup and 4runner have the same frame with slight modification and can be used as a donor
* clean title… you could insure and drive it as is, though I wouldn’t recommend it

Approx 440,000 km on the vehicle. Not sure how much on the engine (likely rebuilt at some point but no guarantees).

I’ve been offered $400 for the cassette deck alone and $1000 for the front axle alone. I’d prefer to sell whole to someone with the passion, time and patience to restore it. I’m currently asking $3000, non-negotiable but I will reduce asking price periodically and repost till it sells.

Feel free to offer something lower. I won’t be offended but will just put you on a list to call in order of bid if I can’t sell it for more. I’m in no rush to sell.

Available to view most evenings after 6pm or most weekends after 10am.
