Owner’s Experience with the 1998 Lexus GS400
The current owner bought this gem in 2021 and has shown great care since. Here’s what you should know about its maintenance and current condition:
- Regularly maintained, with documented services since acquisition.
- Major work includes a new timing belt and water pump installation, along with fresh power steering, brake, and transmission fluid.
- Synthetic oil changes every six months ensure the engine runs smoothly, with recent updates to brakes and differential fluids.
- All features are functional; from power door locks to a sunroof—though the latter is seldom used.
- Inside and out, the vehicle is clean and aesthetically pleasing for its age.
Points to Consider for a Vintage Vehicle
Every classic car has its quirks, and the 1998 Lexus GS400 is no exception:
- Upon purchase, the car displayed three dashboard lights—ABS, VTS, and a check engine light—related to an emissions sensor. These issues did not impair driving performance.
- The odometer and speedometer have stopped working, likely due to a speed sensor malfunction. However, if you enjoy a laid-back driving experience, this should not be a concern.
- While the stereo is operational, it has a blurry display. The owner typically listens to CDs, rendering this issue minor.
- The shifter occasionally gets stuck in Park, but the release button offers a straightforward workaround.

Hi, if you are even looking at my ad, you are either a fan of old Lexus, like the 1UZ V8 engine, or want the reliability of Toyota products, or all of them. So I won’t bore you with how reliable or how solid a daily driver it is, I will stick to what you need to or should know.
– Bought in 2021, has been my daily since. It has had a few owners before me, and since my ownership I’ve kept it mechanically well maintained and sound, I have records of work done.
– Upon buying it, I put in new timing belt and water pump in 2021, at same time, new power steering, brake, and transmission fluid, amongst other things. Ever since, I’ve stayed on top of regular maintenance. Including new brakes and differential fluids this year.
– I need to buy another used vehicle that’s taller due to my mother’s hip problems. Otherwise I would never sell this car because I really do love it.
– Synthetic engine oil and filter change every six months. Stock chrome wheels in like new condition. All lights, power door locks and windows work. Sunroof works too although I rarely use it.
– Car starts every time. It’s clean inside out and cosmetically pretty good for its age. Engine and transmission are solid.
Here are what a 25-plus year car experiences:
– When I bought the car, there were 3 dash lights. ABS, VTS, and engine light on due to some kind of emission sensor. Did not affect driving so they became a to do later item.
– Speedometre and odometre stopped working this year. It’s probably a speed sensor thing. I am an old guy that prefers driving within speed limit, and if you are the same, and since this is an old car, you can probably just leave it. Guestimated 325,000kms.
– Stereo system works but has a blurry display screen. I only ever just listen to CDs on repeat so didn’t bother me.
– Brake lights work fine but once in a while the shifter would get stuck in Park. When that happens, I just use the release button. Again, probably a sensor thing.
Please contact me if interested and come and see. Price negotiable in person. Just want the car to go to a good home.
