I Imported This Car from Japan: My Unique Experience with a 1998 Toyota Celica GT-FOUR

Owning a unique car allows you to stand out from the crowd. My journey began when I imported a striking 1998 Toyota Celica GT-FOUR from Japan. This car has served as my daily driver, and it continues to gather attention wherever I go, sparking curiosity and questions from enthusiasts and casual observers alike. In this article, I will share my experiences with this unique vehicle, discuss its cosmetic and mechanical condition, and outline how you too can acquire your dream car using AllCreditAuto.Loan.

Cosmetic Condition

The Celica GT-FOUR is visually captivating, although its cosmetic appearance can be described as fair. The car has some surface rust in various areas, along with minor blemishes that are part of its charm. The most noticeable issue is located on the right rear corner, where there is a dent, and the tail light has suffered a crack. Nevertheless, these imperfections add to the personality of the car rather than detract from it.

Additionally, there’s a rear spoiler that has some play in it. This issue has persisted since I imported the vehicle but has not shown any signs of deterioration. It’s a testament to the car’s durability and resilience, both of which are characteristic of Japanese engineering.

Interior Condition

The interior of my Celica GT-FOUR is in good shape. The seating is comfortable, perfect for daily use. However, the steering wheel exhibits minor wear, a sign of the car’s age and the miles driven. Unfortunately, the windshield is cracked, which is a common issue in older vehicles, especially ones that have seen some action on the road.

Mechanical Condition

Mechanically, the Celica GT-FOUR is sound. It starts, drives, accelerates, shifts, and stops without any significant issues. However, like any vehicle, it has its quirks. One of the CV shafts features a cracked ABS interruptor ring. While this causes the ABS system to act up at slow speeds before coming to a stop—triggering the ABS modulator—it’s important to note that the ABS system remains functional. This minor issue should be kept in mind, especially for those new to performance cars.

The vehicle does not consume oil or coolant, which is a significant plus for any car owner. The only other mechanical concern is a minor oil leak from the distributor, but the rest of the engine and drivetrain are leak-free, which indicates a well-maintained vehicle.

Modifications

My Celica GT-FOUR comes with a few modifications that enhance its performance:

  • GFB boost controller (I run the car below stock boost pressure)
  • GFB blow-off valve
  • Hertz rear and front speakers

These upgrades offer improved driveability and sound quality, making my daily driving experience even more enjoyable.

Current Issues to Note

Despite its many strengths, the vehicle has some issues that potential buyers or future owners should consider:

  • ABS pulses at slow speeds (as mentioned earlier)
  • Cracked windshield
  • Left side mirror will not power retract/extract

I imported this car from Japan. Used it as my daily driver. Very unique and cool car, always gathers attention and sparks questions.

Cosmetically in fair condition. Some surface rust here and there, couple blemishes with worst being right rear (pictured) where corner is dented and tail light cracked. Rear spoiler has some play in it, however it has been like that since I imported it, has not deteriorated.

Interior in good condition. Steering wheel shows minor wear. Windshield is cracked.

Mechanically in good condition. Starts, drives, accelerates, shifts, and stops without issue. On one of the CV shafts, the ABS interruptor ring is cracked, this upsets the ABS system when coming to a stop and triggers the ABS modulator. This only happens at slow speed before stopping, ABS system still works. Does not consume oil or coolant. Distributor has a minor oil leak, remaining engine and drivetrain leak free.
