Parting Ways with Atlas: The 1982 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia

Sadly, the time has come to part ways with Atlas, my beloved EJ25 powered 1982 Volkswagen Vanagon Westfalia. Over the past ten years, I have painstakingly gone through every mechanical system in the van, either fixing or upgrading it with the highest quality parts available. After all this work, the reality is that I simply don’t use the van enough to justify keeping it around. My hope is that I can pass it on to someone who will take it on the adventures it deserves.

Mechanical Masterpiece

Atlas is by no means a concourse car; the paint is a little rough around the edges. However, mechanically, the vehicle is top-notch. It runs, drives, turns, and stops far better than any Vanagon that ever left the factory, and far better than the vast majority of Vanagons you’ll see on sale today. I wouldn’t hesitate to drive it across the country tomorrow. Best of all, because Atlas is registered as a diesel, this is a rare opportunity to enjoy EJ25 power in California without having to worry about smog!

Highlights of Atlas

  • Rebuilt EJ25 installed with KEP parts by the experts at 523Rods
  • Late model transaxle rebuilt by AA transaxles with new R&P, Peloquin TBD, 4th gear splash plate, and more
  • Full suspension rebuilt (literally every bolt, bearing, bushing, etc. replaced) with Schwenk springs, Bilstein XHD shocks, T3 sway bar/HD endlinks, T3 Upper and lower ball joints, Powerflex bushings
  • Small car big brakes up front and Gowesty disc conversion in the rear
  • Camping interior completely removed, cleaned, reassembled with new insulation, new tent
  • Less than 10K miles on the engine swap and less than 5K miles on the rebuilt suspension/brakes (total mileage on the vehicle is unknown, but this is basically irrelevant since almost all mechanicals have been upgraded/replaced)
