This is a Fun, Practical, Low-Cost EV for Local Driving

The 2014 Chevy Spark EV is a delightful option for anyone looking for an efficient and compact electric vehicle. With its exciting driving dynamics and practical features, it stands out in a market filled with numerous electric vehicle options.

Why the Spark EV? A Competitive Choice

Priced competitively with a high-end cargo e-bike, the Spark EV offers advantages that an e-bike simply cannot provide. You can park it outside overnight, navigate through the rain with ease, and enjoy the added safety of airbags. It’s shorter than a Mini Cooper, making city parking a breeze, especially with the included backup camera. With a fantastic turning radius, maneuvering through tight spots becomes effortless.

Capacity and Practicality

The four-door Spark EV is more practical than other small electric vehicles, such as the Fiat 500E or even the BMW i3, which lack rear doors. Furthermore, compared to competitors like the Nissan Leaf, the Spark has significantly less battery degradation over time, ensuring a reliable driving experience.

Commuting Made Easy

Many owners use the Chevy Spark EV primarily for commuting. With an estimated range of 45-60 miles on a full charge, it’s perfect for daily urban commutes. It’s equipped with an intuitive warning system that alerts you when battery levels drop to 20%, allowing you ample time to plan your next charge. For example, charging at home once a week is often all you need to keep your Spark EV ready for the road.

Charging Capabilities

Outfitted with a Level 1 charger, the Spark EV is also Level 2 capable, ensuring you have options for charging. While it lacks Level 3 DC fast charging—an aspect some may view as a downside—this feature helps protect the battery’s longevity and efficiency.

Innovative Battery Technology

One of the standout features of the Spark EV is its long-lasting lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with active cooling. This technology is becoming standard in modern electric vehicles and is an upgrade over what was available in other models from 2015-16, ensuring superior reliability.

Performance You’ll Love

The Spark EV accelerates like a sports car, thanks to its impressive 400 ft-lbs of torque. For those who enjoy a bit of excitement behind the wheel, this car delivers an exhilarating driving experience that you would not expect from a compact electric vehicle.

Convenience Features

Technology in the Spark EV enhances convenience, including:

  • An aftermarket backup camera that integrates seamlessly with the factory media display. This feature activates automatically when you shift into reverse, making parking in tight spots a cinch.
  • Factory media system equipped with radio and Bluetooth capability (though lacking CarPlay/Android Auto).
  • Media controls on the steering wheel for ease of use.
  • Upgraded leatherette seats with a driver-side armrest and heated front seats, offering comfort while being energy-efficient.
  • Power mirrors and windows for added convenience.
  • Multiple airbags, including both front and rear side curtains, for enhanced safety.

Recent Maintenance and Condition

Recent maintenance efforts make this vehicle an attractive option:

  • New brake pads, rotors, and brake fluid.
  • New 12v battery for reliable starts.
  • New wiper blades, front, and rear for clear visibility.

While the vehicle does display some cosmetic flaws on the rear bumper and wheels, it remains otherwise clean both inside and out. It’s worth mentioning that it has an open recall concerning “risk of hood latch corrosion,” which can be addressed for free at any Chevy dealer. Overall, this is a car that has been well-maintained and cared for.

$7,500

sunset / parkside

This is a fun, practical, low-cost EV for local driving. Check out reviews on YouTube or Car & Driver’s 2014 comparison test. This is priced competitively with a high end cargo e-bike, except you can park it outside overnight, use it in the rain, and it has airbags 😂. It’s shorter than a Mini Cooper, so very easy to park on the City, especially with the backup camera added. The turning radius is also great. The 4 doors are a lot more practical than the Fiat 500E or even BMW i3 half door in the rear. Has much less battery degradation issues vs the Nissan Leaf.

I used it mainly to commute to and from BART and charged at home once a week. The estimated range is 60-45 miles when fully charged, it it will give you a warning when you are down to 20% battery. I never ran into an issue with range while using it in SF.

Level 1 charger included / Level 2 capable. No Level 3 DC fast charge on this one, which is a downside, but probably helps protect the battery.

Long lasting lithium iron phosphate (LFP) battery with active cooling, which is what most current EVs use now, but not available in 2015-16 Spark or competitors.

Accelerates like a sports car thanks to massive 400 ft-lbs torque output

Aftermarket backup camera cleanly integrated into the factory media display. You shift into reverse and the camera displays automatically. Super helpful fitting into tight city parking spaces.

Factory media with radio & Bluetooth. No CarPlay / Android Auto. Media control on the steering wheel.

Upgraded leatherette seat with driver side armrest. Front seats are both heated, which is more efficient than using the HVAC

Power mirrors and windows

Lots of airbags, including front and rear side curtain

New brake pads, rotors, and brake fluid

New 12v battery

New wiper blades, front and rear

Cons:
Some cosmetic flaws on rear bumper and wheels, but otherwise very clean inside and out.

It has an open recall for “risk of hood latch corrosion” which I haven’t gotten around to addressing. The hood latch looks fine, I don’t think this is a major concern for a CA car, but you can get it fixed for free at a Chevy dealer.
