Discover the Charm of a 1968 Chevrolet Caprice Custom Coupe

In the world of classic cars, few vehicles evoke as much nostalgia and admiration as the 1968 Chevrolet Caprice Custom Coupe. This article delves into one such Caprice that has been cherished and preserved over the years, offering a glimpse into its history and why it’s an appealing choice for car enthusiasts and collectors alike.

Background of the Vehicle

Bought back in 2016, this 1968 Chevrolet Caprice is currently the second registered owner of this classic. Originating from Big Bear, California, it carries the legacy of being a Southern California plant car, known for its durability and distinctive features. For a period from 2016 to 2020, it served as a daily driver but now stands as a remarkable classic vehicle, currently registered and insured as such.

Condition and Modifications

This Caprice is a running project with a storied past. While it has rust in common areas—typical for vehicles of this era—most collectors are familiar with these nuances and understand their importance in the car’s character. The vehicle remains largely original, apart from a few key upgrades:

  • Griffin Aluminum Radiator: This custom upgrade improves the car’s cooling system, ensuring optimal performance.
  • Upgraded Brakes: The owner has installed a comprehensive disc brake kit from Summit, providing enhanced stopping power and reliability.
  • Engine Specifications: The Caprice houses a matching numbers 327 engine complete with double hump heads, which are typically found in Corvettes, showcasing the classic’s performance pedigree.
  • 20-Inch Rims: Fresh 20-inch rims were added, and they come equipped with tires boasting only 1,500 miles, ensuring longevity.

Unique Features and Repairs

Among the vehicle’s unique features, one can find a trunk lock that had been partially modified by the previous owner for an electric pop lock. This project remains unfinished, thus the trunk is accessible solely through the rear seat. Furthermore, the owner has made notable improvements to the car, including:

  • New Vinyl Top: A complete restoration of the roof was executed using the correct methods, adding to the car’s classic charm.
  • Stainless Trim Restoration: The stainless trim appears polished and bright, contributing significantly to the car’s aesthetic appeal.
  • Bumper Replating: In 2018, the bumpers were replated, enhancing their luster.
  • Interior Enhancements: The interior boasts a Strato bench seat and Strato air system, ensuring comfort for both driver and passengers.

The Reason for Sale

While the vehicle has been meticulously cared for, the decision to sell has been driven by a new vehicle purchase. Initially intended as a project for the owner’s son, who ultimately decided to pursue a different automotive path. Thus, this classic Caprice is now available for sale, allowing someone else to appreciate and finish the project.

A Gem for Car Enthusiasts

Being a complete car, with all trim and parts in order, this vehicle stands as a testament to the owner’s commitment to preserving its legacy. The engine runs smoothly, and while it has been sitting idle for two years, it is started periodically to maintain its reliability. For those interested in classic cars, this Caprice represents an opportunity to dive into a world of automotive culture.

city of san francisco

Bought this car in 2016. I am the second registered owner. Car is out of Big Bear California and is a Southern California plant car. This is a running project though I did daily drive it from 2016-2020. It is currently registered and insured as a classic car. It has rust in all the expected places so don’t ask unless you are aware of these vehicles. It is all original other than a griffin aluminum radiator I put in it and upgraded the brakes to disc all around with a “right stuff” brake kit from summit. It has all numbers matching 327 with double hump heads (engines would have been in corvettes) . I also put on 20 inch rims on it. The tires have about 1500 miles on them so pretty new. The guy that owned it before me tried to shave off the trunk lock for a electric pop lock but didn’t finish it and I didn’t do anything with it so the trunk can only be opened through access from the rear seat. I did put on a new vinyl top and did the repairs on the roof the correct way. I cleaned up all the stainless trim and also had the bumpers replated in 2018. The front grills were polished finished. Reason I am selling is because I purchased a different vehicle and decided to leave this one for my son. He unfortunately does not want it and has decided to do a different car from the 90’s so this is up for sale so we may put the money towards the other car he likes. Engine runs healthy and car could drive but it has been sitting for two years. I do turn it on every now and again to keep engine smooth. I have all the correct trim for the body sides and I have an extra dash I had acquired for it. This is the custom coupe. It is a complete car with all trim. Strato bench seat. And strato air system. As you can see in the pictures , the last guy had painted everything black so I cleaned it all up and brought it back to the original classic look with the bright work. Everything I’ve done to the car was done correctly without cutting corners so I like to think I left this car better than I found it. Rather than letting it sit for longer I have decided to let someone else finish and or enjoy the car. If you have any questions please ask. I am firm on the price so don’t text or call or email with low ball offers. All original transmission/engine. Engine was pulled and cleaned up for reliability. Would consider trade for a 98 Honda prelude which is what my son is looking for. It is priced to sell. Car is located in Reno Nv.Thank you for looking
